Simple Content Strategy Framework
How often do you create or update your content strategy?
I know companies that do it once a year and others planning a month at a time. It varies by company, but here's a framework that works well for most.
Annually
- Establish goals
- Outline core channels/formats that you will be committing to for the year
- Determine the core topics you plan to cover in-depth for the year
Quarterly
- Create roadmaps for all content types for that quarter (blog, guides, podcast, videos, and so on)
- Nail down more specifics on cadences for various topics and formats to make sure bandwidth and budget is planned accordingly
- Align with other departments on plans and goals
Monthly
- Detailed content calendars & publishing schedules
- Specific requirements for all design, writing, development, and distribution needed for the month
It doesn't make sense to try to plan a year's worth of extreme detail upfront, and you can't be making big changes to channels and formats every month.
This framework helps balance that with getting progressively more detailed as you go from annual to quarterly to monthly.
